Georgia tech ChatGPT Essay Exercise

For the ChatGPT Essay exercise, you will be given a set of possible prompts to choose from.  You must then go to ChatGPT and generate an essay from that prompt.  Your task will then be to copy the essay to a document, then you will write an essay to assess the quality of the essay that ChatGPT generated.

Grading Rubric Instructions:

  1. Generate your essay: a. Choose a prompt for your essay from the list below. b. Allow ChatGPT to generate an essay on that topic. c. Copy the generated essay to a file.
  2. Read the essay carefully:
    a. Analyze the essay to determine whether the information provided is correct or incorrect.
    b. Pay attention to factual accuracy, logical consistency, and coherence.
  3. Identify and categorize mistakes:
    a. Categorize the mistakes into different types, such as factual errors, logical fallacies (guide to logical fallacies), or inconsistencies.
    b. Create a checklist or grading sheet to record the mistakes and their respective categories.
  4. Evaluate the severity of mistakes:
    a. Determine the impact of each mistake on the overall quality and credibility of the essay.
    b. Assign points or weights to each mistake based on its significance.
  5. Develop a grading scale:
    a. Design a grading scale to assign scores to the essay based on the number and severity of mistakes.
    For example:

    • Minor mistakes: 1 point deduction each
    • Moderate mistakes: 2 points deduction each
    • Major mistakes: 3 points deduction each
  6. Grade the essay:
    a. Go through the essay sentence by sentence or paragraph by paragraph.
    b. Mark each mistake according to the grading scale you developed.
    c. Deduct points for each mistake and keep a cumulative tally.
  7. Provide constructive feedback:
    a. Summarize the major mistakes or issues found in the essay.
    b. Offer specific examples and explanations for each mistake. Provide citations of sources that support or refute ChatGPT.
    c. Suggest corrections or improvements to address the identified errors.
    d. Include positive feedback for any areas where the essay demonstrates accuracy and clarity.

Remember, while grading for correctness, consider the limitations of ChatGPT as an AI model. Focus on evaluating the factual accuracy and logical coherence of the generated content, rather than penalizing for the model’s limitations.

Ensure that your grading is fair, objective, and consistent.
Your submission should be no longer than three pages (exclusive of citations), must be original work (excluding the portion generated by ChatGPT), and should include both the essay that ChatGPT generated as well as your assessment of the generated essay (and the alphabetized list of citations at the end, which does not count towards your page count).

Reference List

For your assessment, you will need a list of references which support your assessments.  You will need at least 10 references.  The list should be in APA format (APA CITATION GUIDE).  The easiest way to do this is by using CITATION MACHINE

Citation Machine can usually produce adequate citations, though be careful!  Sometimes it doesn’t know how to handle what you give it, and you have to give it some help.  Things to look for to see if a citation needs editing:

  • Does the title match?
  • Does the date list n.d. (no date)?  If so, is that really the case?
  • Was Citation Machine unable to find the author?  Or is the author listed as something bizarre?
  • Is your list of citations alphabetized?
  • If a link is included (usually it should be), does the link actually go to the cited material?
